Your USA study guide: from course research to a clear next step
Planning to study in the USA? Start with your subject, qualification level and budget. Our counsellors can help you compare programmes, organise application documents and prepare questions for universities.
1. Choose the programme
Compare modules, degree requirements, duration, campus and academic fit. For postgraduate study, check both university and department requirements. Verify accreditation separately from SEVP certification; these checks serve different purposes.
Use the official School Search to check whether the school and programme can enrol F-1 or M-1 students. Match the exact campus and study level to your intended programme, then ask the international admissions team about any unclear details.
Build a course-specific list of transcripts, qualification records, statements, references and any CV or portfolio required. Check the programme’s English evidence and any admission-test requirements before booking an exam. Follow the institution’s submission instructions.
Continue: funding, I-20 and your application record
4. Compare the full cost and confirmed funding
List tuition, mandatory university fees, insurance, accommodation, meals, travel and personal expenses for the planned course duration. Separate confirmed family funds and written awards from pending scholarship or assistantship applications. Ask what each award covers, its renewal conditions and any duties attached.
5. After acceptance: organise the I-20 and visa stage
For the F-1 route, work with the school on its Form I-20 process and requested financial evidence. Check your personal details, programme and school information before using the form. The visa process includes SEVIS registration, the I-901 fee and the DS-160 application; follow the embassy or consulate’s instructions for the application and interview.
Build a USA study budget around your exact course.
There is no single USA study cost that fits every university, city or student. Our counsellors can help you organise tuition, living costs and funding into a clear plan. Use USD for the original figures and budget for the full period you intend to study.
University and living costs
Start with the university’s tuition and mandatory fees for your exact programme and study period. Add health insurance, housing, utilities, meals, local travel, books, equipment and personal expenses. Check what the university estimate already includes before adding a separate allowance.
Allow for university applications, required tests, document preparation, visa charges, the SEVIS I-901 fee and flights. The visa application fee and SEVIS fee are separate. Check the official payment instructions for your category before budgeting or paying.
Record available family funds, written scholarship awards and usable approved finance separately from pending applications. Check award conditions and loan release timing. Keep refundable housing deposits visible as temporary cash needs, separate from living expenses.
For each expense, record its planned cost, payments already made and unpaid amount. If a tuition deposit is credited towards tuition, subtract it from the tuition still to pay rather than adding it as another expense. Apply a confirmed fee discount once; do not deduct it again from funding if it is already included in the tuition figure.
Add unpaid expenses and refundable deposits still needed, then subtract confirmed funds still available for those payments. Keep a separate payment schedule so you can see whether funds will be available when needed. Pending scholarships, unapproved loans and unconfirmed employment income should not be counted as confirmed funding.
For an optional INR estimate, multiply the USD amount by your chosen INR-per-USD exchange rate. Record conversion and transfer charges separately if they are not already included. Use Not yet confirmed for any missing amount.
Keep the I-20 evidence check separate
Follow the school’s financial-evidence instructions for its Form I-20 process. Check the period and costs covered by its estimate against your study budget; do not add the I-20 estimate as a second set of expenses. See the DHS financial-ability guidance for the evidence stage.
Download your USA budget worksheet
The one-page PDF opens directly on your phone. Save or print it and use your own figures; it is a manual worksheet and does not calculate totals automatically. Bring any gaps to a free Guntur counselling conversation or discuss borrowing questions with our education-loan guidance team.
Compare USA admissions requirements course by course.
Build a shortlist around your academic background, subject interests and available funding. Our counsellors can help you organise the evidence for each programme and identify questions for its admissions team.
Course and academic fit
Compare the exact degree, department, campus, study mode, modules and thesis or project options. Match your previous subjects and qualifications to the programme’s prerequisites. Record any required foundation or additional coursework.
Entry and test requirements
Check both university-wide and department requirements. Record the academic criteria, accepted English evidence and whether GRE, GMAT or another test is required, optional or waived for your application. Do not carry one programme’s requirements across to another.
Funding and practical fit
Compare the full course cost, location, funding application route and award conditions. Keep requested or pending assistantships separate from confirmed support. Check school and campus details through the official SEVP School Search where relevant to your study route.
Two official course examples to practise your comparison
Arizona State University — Computer Science, MS: use the official degree page to compare its Tempe campus, research-focused course structure, degree-specific academic criteria and preparation requirements. Review the programme requirements alongside the general graduate-admissions requirements.
University of Texas at Arlington — Computer Science, MS: use the official programme page to compare thesis and non-thesis options, academic preparation and the factors considered during selection.
These examples show how to research a programme. Your shortlist can include other subjects and universities that fit your profile. Confirm the exact course, campus, mode, intended entry and application status before deciding.
Keep one comparison record per programme
Record the university, degree, department, campus, mode, intended intake, official URL, entry requirements, tests, documents, total cost, funding route, application status and next action. Use Not yet confirmed for missing details.
Compare your profile with the published criteria and explain why each course is on your list. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. For the process overview, see EducationUSA’s graduate application guidance.
These are suggested preparation stages, not university deadlines. Build the sequence around the exact programme and intended intake. Keep the course-application deadline, funding deadline, reference submission, acceptance or deposit, I-20 preparation and latest-arrival instructions separate.
Research and shortlist
Compare courses, campuses, entry requirements and the full study budget. Save official links and confirm whether international applications are being accepted. Record unanswered questions before choosing where to apply.
Prepare and submit
Request academic records and references, prepare your own statements and arrange any required tests. Check document formats and submission methods. Review the complete application before submitting and retain the acknowledgement.
Track the decision
Monitor the university portal and referee submissions. Respond to requests for missing evidence. Keep funding applications and admissions decisions as separate records, with the next action and person responsible.
After an offer
Review conditions, acceptance instructions, payment and refund terms. Confirm the school’s financial-evidence and Form I-20 process for the F-1 route. Review the I-20 details with the school before using it for visa preparation. Follow the US Department of State student visa process for the SEVIS I-901 fee, DS-160 and interview steps.
Before travel
Check the school’s orientation, enrolment and arrival instructions, accommodation, travel documents and the requirements for entering the USA. Bring unresolved school or immigration-document questions to the designated school official before making travel arrangements.
Your USA document and progress checklist
Identity: passport and personal details consistent across the application and school records.
Academic evidence: transcripts, marksheets, qualification records and any requested translations or credential evaluation.
Programme evidence: English results, admission-test scores, CV, portfolio or experience evidence where required.
Statements and references: programme-specific writing, suitable referees and confirmation of the correct submission route.
After an offer: written conditions, acceptance record, payment receipts, financial evidence requested by the school and I-20 checks.
Visa preparation: relevant I-20, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipts and supporting evidence required for your application.
Travel preparation: school contact, orientation and arrival instructions, accommodation and travel-document checks.
Use Ready, Pending, Needs clarification or Not required for each document. For a deadline or application status you have not verified, use Not yet confirmed. A published course start does not establish that applications are open.
The download is a general preparation checklist; confirm your programme-specific requirements with the university. All Masters Visa Guntur services are free. Third-party university, exam, visa and lender fees are paid to their respective providers.
Questions to resolve before your USA study application
Keep a short decision note alongside each programme. What attracts you to the modules? Which published entry requirement still needs clarification? Is the fee figure for one semester, one academic year or the full programme? Who can confirm the next deadline in writing?
For USA study planning, record the source and date beside each answer. If a university has not confirmed a detail, leave it as a question rather than filling the gap with an assumption. Share the same record with anyone helping you so that application, funding and travel discussions use consistent information.
Before committing, review the complete record yourself. Keep copies of your questions, the university’s replies, submitted application and payment terms. This makes later decisions easier to trace.
